ISO 6259 Determination of the Tensile Properties of Thermoplastics Pipes
Tensile tests on specimens made of thermoplastics pipes are used for the characterization of the material behavior in the processing state. The ISO 6259 series specifies a procedure for determination of the tensile properties of thermoplastics pipes, including the following: Stress at yield and strain at break.
Significance of Tensile properties testing on pipes
Tensile tests are usually used for the characterization of the material behavior in the processing state. These values determined under standardized processing conditions can sometimes deviate considerably from the properties actually present in a pipe. The processing state is completely different in an extruded pipe than in an injection-molded specimen. To characterize this property, test specimens will be taken from the pipe wall in the longitudinal direction of the pipe. Depending on the pipe material and wall thickness of the pipe, different specimen shapes are used, which are each designed for different types of specimen holders. What’s more, specimen’s strain is measured with an optical extensometer, directly on the specimen.
Specimen preparations
Use lengths of pipe of approximately 150 mm.
Cut strips from these various lengths, distributing them around the circumference starting from a generating line taken as the reference line.
Unless otherwise specified, cut at least three strips from each sample so as to be able to take three test pieces (see table 1).

- b) Pipes of nominal outside diameter greater than 63 mm
Use a length of pipe of approximately 150 mm.
Cut strips from the length in such a way that they are equally distributed around the circumference of the pipe as shown in figure 1.
Unless otherwise specified, divide the circumference of the pipe length into a number of sectors, depending on the diameter of the pipe, as given in the table 1. Cut out one test piece per strip.
