Industry Standard – Composites – ASTM D3410

ASTM D3410 is a test standard for determining the in-plane compressive properties of high-modulus fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites. This test method is designed to generate compressive performance data for CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer), primarily used in the aerospace industry for material specification, research and development, quality assurance, and structural design and analysis.

Test Procedure

  • Condition the specimens
  • Apply strain gages
  • Specimen Installation
  • Start test

It is desired to maintain a constant strain rate in the gage section. Select the strain rate so as to produce failure within 1 to 10 min from the beginning of force application. If the ultimate strain of the material cannot be reasonably estimated, conduct initial trials using standard crosshead speeds until the ultimate strain of the material and the compliance of the system are known, and the strain rate can be adjusted. The suggested standard rates are:

Strain-Controlled Tests—A standard strain rate of 0.01 min−1.

Constant Head-Speed Tests—A standard crosshead displacement of 1.5 mm/min [0.05 in./min].

  • Analysis of the Validity of Test Results

After the test, inspect the specimens and note the type and location of failure. For a valid test, the final failure of the specimen should occur within the working section, and the ends should not be crushed during the test. At least five specimens should be tested under the same conditions.
